Historian Bettany Hughes comes to the end of her epic journey across Egypt in Channel 5 series The Nile: Egypt's Great River
Historian Bettany Hughes’ travels on The Nile: Egypt's Great River comes to a close in southern Egypt.
She visits a temple built to worship the crocodiles that once would have terrorised the banks of this ancient river and looks on as a team of archaeologists discover a giant stone slab, used by the ancient Egyptians as a public message board.
Her next stop is the city of Aswan, where she visits The Old Cataract Hotel, a gorgeous example of old-school opulence and a favourite of Winston Churchill, who now has a sumptuous suite named after him.

Her final destination is Abu Simbel, a temple on a grand scale, where the pharaoh who built it is still illuminated with god-like brilliance even today.
