Hollyoaks and Casualty in running for sexual health award

Hard-hitting storylines from Hollyoaks and Casualty are set to go head to head for a national award next month.

Hollyoaks was picked as a finalist for the UK Sexual Health Awards 2014 for a storyline about sexting, which revolved around character Holly Cunningham after she sent a revealing photograph of herself to her boyfriend.

Actress Amanda Clapham (pictured), who plays the schoolgirl in Hollyoaks, said: “I was incredibly privileged to have taken on this storyline so soon after joining the cast of Hollyoaks. Sexting is a very current issue and I hope that the storyline reached out to young people that may have found themselves feeling similar to Holly.

“We also had support from the NSPCC, who produced an online video with the four of us involved in the storyline for the new Zipit app. This is a brilliant device if ever someone feels uncomfortable when asked for a photo of themselves."

Casualty is shortlisted for addressing the issue of female genital mutilation in the episode Unsilenced, where doctor Zoe helped a young victim.

The winner of the award will be announced on 14 March.
