There's plenty of drama heading for Coronation Street next year - but boss Iain MacLeod has revealed that one of the biggest storylines will focus on a very unlikely character...

New Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has spoken about Amy Barlow's teenage pregnancy for the first time - revealing the storyline is set to be one of the biggest plots for next year.

After days of the rumour circulating that underage Amy will find herself pregnant in the new year, Iain confirmed the storyline to What's On TV and other press at an event yesterday.

Amy Barlow Steve McDonald

Amy is going to put Steve through his paces next year

The new Corrie producer promised that the controversial storyline would be "heart-breaking but ridiculous at the same time".

Talking of how Amy's pregnancy would send a ripple effect around Weatherfield, Iain said: "Amy’s pregnancy will become more than a just a story about a teenage pregnancy, it becomes a story about a family, and Steve and Tracy’s relationship.

"It forces them to grow up and be parents for the first time in history!"

He also hinted that while Amy Barlow might be one of the show's younger character's that doesn't mean she isn't going to step up and be brilliant...

Steve and Tracy Coronation Street

Steve and Tracy have got a shock heading for them next year

"The storyline is really good and gives a leading role to Elle Mulvaney, who I think is really great and deserves the chance to do something a bit more serious and more grown up. I'm very much looking forward to that".

But as always with Coronation Street, the storyline isn't going to be all doom and gloom. As with most Corrie plots, there will still be that much-loved element of humour in the scripts...

"It’s also really funny," says Iain. "Steve and Tracy dealing with a teenage pregnancy is not like a normal couple dealing with a teen pregnancy, there are certain scenes reminiscent of Peter Griffin in Family Guy. Steve goes fully postal at certain times.

"It's classic Steve, very funny. It’s heartbreaking but ridiculous at the same time."

Are these two really ready to be grandparents?

It has been rumoured that Tyler Jefferies will be the father of Amy's baby, but these claims have yet to be confirmed.

Fans will remember Tyler is the gang leader who has been tormenting Simon Barlow this year. Could he really be the one who has got Amy in the family way?

We wouldn't like to be in his shoes when Steve finds out!

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
