Coronation Street fans convinced legendary character isn't dead because of THIS reason

There's more drama still to come in Coronation Street...

Coronation Street fans have been left heartbroken for Audrey Roberts after Lewis Archer died exactly 20 years to the day that her late husband Alf Roberts died.

Last night's hour-long New Year's Day special of the soap was packed full of drama, but it was Audrey's romance with lewis that got fans talking.

Thanks to Gail being convinced that Lewis was up to his old tricks once again, Audrey was determined she should call time on her relationship with her troublesome ex... but as the episode went on, Lewis managed to win her round again.

Coronation Street spoilers: Gail Platt persuades Audrey to ditch Lewis

Audrey was stood up again by Lewis last night - but he had a good excuse

The pair organised a date that evening in the Bistro, with Lewis promising to be there on time.

But as usual Audrey was left waiting at the table alone - nine years exactly to the day that the pair went on their first date.

But for once Lewis had a legitimate reason for not turning up to their dinner date - and all was revealed when Audrey went to find him at home and see where he'd got to.

She was heartbroken to find him dead on the floor - but to make the moment even more devastating, she also found he was clutching an engagement ring.

As the realisation that Lewis was going to propose to her that evening dawned, the salon owner was joined by Gail, who might have been shocked - but probably wasn't that sorry - to see Lewis had met his maker.

Audrey made it very clear that she blames Gail for Lewis's untimely demise, telling her daughter that he had been to the doctors that morning because of pains in his shoulder and chest - pains that he claimed were caused by Gail's interfering.

Fans were horrified that Lewis had died on such an important day for Audrey, who lost her husband Alf to a heart attack on New Year's Day 2 decades ago...

Some fans are convinced his 'death' is just another of Lewis's cons, and that he's not really dead at all.

Could the fact Lewis 'died' on the anniversary of Alf's death be all part of the plan?

So is this really the end of Corrie's legendary con man, or is this just another of Lewis's plans to scheme everything out of his loved ones?

Whatever the truth, poor Audrey is set to be heartbroken when yet another twist in the tale is aired in tonight's Coronation Street.

The drama is only just beginning...
