In this breezy Canadian drama, a brilliant – and beautiful - Mexican nanny (Nicola Correia Damude) quietly eases the busy lives of unmarried parents Ben (Patrick McKenna) and Gail (Claire Lautier) and their teenage daughter Mali (Maya Ritter). From cooking to cleaning, shopping to mending, pretty Margarita does it all – and with warmth and love. She has a happy life with her employers and, what’s more, her girlfriend Jane (Christine Horne) is allowed to visit whenever she likes.
So it goes without saying that this hot and handy supernanny gets a big shock when Ben and Gail tell her they’re going to have to let her go because of their dire financial problems. Worse still, this bad news triggers off a chain of events that manages to expose Margarita’s secret – she’s an illegal immigrant! Will she have to now leave the country or is there anything anyone around her can do to help her stay?
Light, cheery, and very easy to watch, this warm and funny drama does also address serious issues such as race, class and immigration, but it does so with a gentle, feel-good touch that doesn’t get too bogged down in the seriousness of these issues. Directors Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert have simply presented a situation, and left the audience to form their own opinions, preferring instead to take a more fantastical romantic comedy route.
The performances are all strong, but it is Nicola Correia Damude who truly holds the film together as Margarita. She lights up the screen throughout with her beauty. So, if you’re looking for an easy watch you can’t go wrong with this. It’s a lovely sweet story garnished with even sweeter eye candy.
Margarita is released on DVD by Peccadillo Pictures on 25th November.
