Couch Potato Pickings | 50 First Dates

Drew Barrymore

50 First Dates, showing on G.O.L.D. tonight at 9pm, stars Adam Sandler as a philandering Hawaii vet who won't commit himself to anything more than one-night stands with tourists - until he falls for local girl Lucy, played by Drew Barrymore. But when he discovers that a car crash has left her with severe short-term memory loss, he finds that he has to woo her afresh every day for the rest of his life.

If you like the sound of this movie and you’re now planning to watch it because it sounds a lot like Groundhog Day, then don’t. That’s not because it’s not like Groundhog Day, but because the far superior Groundhog Day is showing on Easter Sunday (on ITV1 at 2.50pm).

50 First Dates is a mildly entertaining offering of romcom froth, but my advice is to give this film a miss and watch one of the others showing tonight, like The Others on BBC2 at 10.15pm. A few Friday night frights are always fun and this spooky tale, starring Nicole Kidman, is the perfect creepy vehicle to do that, even if you’ve already seen it and know the twist.
