Couch Potato Pickings | Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - would you like to smell this movie?

Apparently, 50 years ago a new cinema phenomenon was launched - Smell-O-Vision. Cinemagoers were able to experience the smells as well as the sights and sounds of a movie thanks to a series of odours released into the auditorium at choice moments.

Funnily enough, it didn't catch on. But, as creepy as it may sound, I wish it existed for this movie - the story of an 18th-century perfumer whose obsession with capturing the perfect scent turns him into a serial killer. It's based on the novel by Patrick Suskind.

I know most of the story's smells would be stomach-churning, but isn't that half the fun? Many of us regularly endure visual and sonic stomach-churning horror in the movies, so what's wrong with introducing another of the senses?

Do you agree? If not, which movie do you think would benefit most from the smell-o-vision experience?

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is showing tonight (23rd January) on BBC2 at 10.30pm
