Doctor Who Christmas special goes ‘superhero!’ in New York

This year’s Doctor Who Christmas special is called 'The Return of Doctor Mysterio' and sees Peter Capaldi's Doctor teaming up with a young comic-book superhero to battle a deadly threat in New York...

This Christmas it’ll be a full year since The Doctor's last adventure, and there’s exciting casting news for this new Doctor Who Christmas special…

Written again by Executive Producer Steven Moffatt, the family favourite will return on Christmas Day on BBC1 and sees the Doctor teams up with an investigative journalist, played by Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall) and a young superhero, as they all battle to save New York from a deadly alien threat.

‘I’ve always loved superheroes and this Christmas Doctor Who dives into that world. My favourite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent,” teases Steven Moffat.

The New York superhero, aka Grant, will be played by Justin Chatwin best known for the US series Orphan Black and the blockbuster film War of the World, alongside Tom Cruise.

“Working with the amazing people at Doctor Who has been one of the most fun and rewarding projects I’ve ever had the pleasure of being involved with,” reveals American star Justin

Matt Lucas returns as Nardole – the likeable character he played in last year’s Christmas special while other cast are Adetomiwa Edun (Lucifer, Bates Motel), Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman.

This hour-long Doctor Who Christmas Special was produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Ed Bazalgette (Poldark), and was shot in Cardiff at BBC Wales Roath Lock Studios.

TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of television so I really have found the perfect job, as I've been writing about TV shows, films and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 25 years. I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas and Tenko. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too.
