Their characters share very little screen-time together – and now we know why…

Emmerdale’s real-life married couple Matthew Wolfenden and Charley Webb have revealed that they refused to do a storyline which saw their on-screen characters end up together.

Matthew, who plays David Metcalfe in the soap, revealed on This Morning that soap bosses pitched him the idea of David and Debbie Dingle, played by Charley, embarking on a relationship.

However, he and his wife pleaded with producers not to go through with the plot, as they felt it would be too much time to spend together.

‘They once suggested that they were going to put our characters together, and we just said, “No it would be dreadful”,’ Matthew told presenters Vanessa Feltz and Dr Ranj Singh on Friday’s This Morning.

‘We go home together, we learn our lines together as it is, the thought of getting up in the morning and travelling to work together and then being at work all day together, doing scenes together, and then going home together.’

He added: ‘We just said, “No, please don't put us together”. It's nice to get up and go off and be with our Emmerdale families and then get back home together at the end of the day.’

Luckily for them, producers listened as David is about to get serious with Maya and Debbie is in an on-off romance with Joe Tate.

Confirming that David and Maya are going to give a relationship a go after spending the night together, Matthew teased: ‘David and Maya will end up together, and there is a big storyline coming up for both of them. It's going to be huge over the next few months.’
