Ex Corrie star Brian Capron goes back to school in new sitcom

Former Coronation Street star Brian Capron, who soap fans will forever remember as serial killer Richard Hillman, is playing a headmaster in a new sitcom pilot.

Staff Room tells the story of Ian Butterworth (Ryan McDermott), a failed filmmaker who's given up on his Hollywood dream to become a secondary school teacher.

Brian plays the school's principal, Peter Kipling, a keen charity fundraiser who's constantly pushing himself and his staff to do outrageous activities for good causes. But when Mr Butterworth ruins a sponsored silence, a more sinister side to Mr Kipling emerges as he calls in local bully 'Psycho' (Ciaran Griffiths, The Bill, Shameless) to exact revenge.

Only a pilot episode has been made so far, by the Salford-based Gone Shootin' Films, but negotiations are underway as to which channel will broadcast the pilot and proposed series.

Also starring in the comedy are DJ Pat Sharp, who's appearing in the school musical production of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, while Charlotte Dawson, daughter of late comedian Les Dawson, makes her comedy debut as sexy Home Economics teacher Katie Dawson.

Nicholas Cannon
TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of television so I really have found the perfect job, as I've been writing about TV shows, films and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 25 years. I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas and Tenko. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too.
