BBC3 is set to show widely acclaimed film Leave to Remain starring Toby Jones.
Toby, who recently won a BAFTA for his BBC’s TV film, Marvellous, stars as Nigel, a caring teacher at a London refugee centre. He grows close to charismatic Afghan teenager, Omar, who is on the brink of having his refugee status confirmed by the authorities.
However, the arrival of Abdul, a familiar face from home, sees Omar rattled. As Omar begins acting out of character, soon Nigel doesn’t know what to believe…
Toby said: “It’s rare these days to come across a film where you’re introduced to an aspect of London you’re only dimly or theoretically aware of, and where you see London in a different light.”
Meticulously researched by writer and director, Bruce Goodison (Home Fires, BAFTA winner Our War), Leave to Remain highlights the inspiring stories of teenage refugees, who come alone to the UK hoping to build a new life, free from the horrors of the past.
Toby added: "I am so proud to be a part of the ongoing story of Leave to Remain. It has been amazing to watch audiences respond and wonder at the plight of the heroes of this story, so brilliantly acted by my younger colleagues. We thought that we were making a film that was up-to-the minute-relevant but actually the issues raised in the film are not going away. Bruce made a seriously magical film about hope and endurance."
Leave to Remain gets its UK TV debut on BBC3, May 31 at 9pm, and will be available on iPlayer afterwards.
