Tokarev | Film review - Nic Cage’s avenging dad goes on the rampage in brutal B-grade crime thriller

Tokarev (2014)

Ex-mobster turned self-made businessman Nicolas Cage goes on the rampage after his daughter is kidnapped in brutal B-grade crime thriller Tokarev. Is the abduction linked to his shady past? Cage's investigative method is to shoot first, ask questions later, so it's no wonder his lines of inquiry run into dead ends. There is a message about the futility of revenge lurking somewhere amid the carnage, but the action and script are so routine that it's hard to work up much enthusiasm about the fates of any of the characters.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
