Happy Valley, 9 pm, BBC One
It’s taken six years, but Sally Wainwright’s gritty Yorkshire-set thriller is back for a third and final outing. Catherine (Sarah Lancashire) is in a good place, with retirement from the police on the horizon and grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) a seemingly happy teenager.
That’s until the discovery of a body sends her back into the path of murderer Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton)… But while they’re all set for a showdown, there are some dubious goings-on in Calderdale and new characters with secrets to hide, including dodgy teacher Rob Hepworth (Trigger Point’s Mark Stanley), who’s not only abusing his wife but also has some kind of vendetta against Ryan. Welcome back, Happy Valley!

The new run of the period drama moves into 1968 and kicks off with a poignant episode. Our hearts go out to Lucille (Leonie Elliott), still feeling lost after her miscarriage, and she and husband Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) are further unsettled by MP Enoch Powell’s inflammatory ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech... As Nancy (Megan Cusack) and Trixie (Helen George) help a dying woman (Clare Burt) and her landlady (Stella Gonet), Trixie also has issues of her own with her upcoming wedding. Meanwhile, intriguing – and thoroughly entertaining! – new nun Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) makes her presence felt.

The Masked Singer, 6.30 pm, ITV1
It seems like only yesterday we were squealing with delight when Panda was unmasked as Natalie Imbruglia in the series three final (we guessed correctly – did you?), but now a new cast of costumed characters are on the scene for a brand new series.
So grab your notebooks and keep your eyes and ears peeled at all times to join celebrity sleuths Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan and Rita Ora in the quest to identify the secret singers, while the brilliant Joel Dommett drops more inspired puns…

The Great New Year Bake Off, 7.40 pm, Channel 4
It’s always lovely to catch up with former Bake Off contestants, and 2023 gets off to a cracking start as Antony and Manon from series nine, Lottie from series 11 and 2021 finalist Chigs venture back into the tent. But even though it’s just for fun, their nerves are still in evidence and Lottie even frets that she’s forgotten how to use the equipment!
Thankfully, there are some splendid offerings for Paul and Dame Prue to taste when the bakers tackle savoury Wellingtons for the Signature and a fiddly Technical followed by a bûche entremet – a festive Yule log to you and me! – for the Showstopper.

Best box set on TV tonight
Even if you haven’t seen this drama, chances are you’ve read about it or had someone tell you how good it is – there was certainly a buzz surrounding the show which some have called the best (and possibly most stressful) on TV. Jeremy Allen White plays young chef Carmy, who applies skills honed working in New York’s hottest spot to running a Chicago sandwich shop after his brother dies and leaves it to him.
If you’re not shouting ‘Behind!’ every time you squeeze between the fridge and a bemused family member, you soon will be. A second series has already been commissioned – are we a little excited to see what’s next for the staff at The Original Beef of Chicagoland? Yes, chef!

Best film on TV tonight
No Time to Die, 8 pm, ITV1
Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007 is vintage Bond, and a cracking movie premiere for New Year’s Day. With a running time of more than two and a half hours plus ad breaks, it’s going to take up a big chunk of your evening, but, rest assured, this is all (license to) killer and no filler.
It begins with a breathtaking pre-titles sequence, set in the sun-drenched Italian city of Matera, and doesn’t let up for a second. Rami Malek is Bond villain Safin and Lashana Lynch (currently to be seen in Matilda the Musical) is MI5 agent Nomi, while Léa Seydoux and Christoph Waltz reprise their roles from Spectre.
