Best TV shows on TV tonight
The Larkins season 2, 6:30pm, ITV
Simon Nye’s delightful adaptation of the HE Bates classic, starring Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan as Pop and Ma Larkin, returns for a second series. With Mariette still away on her honeymoon, the focus falls on younger sister Primrose (Lydia Page), who is smitten by the handsome new vicar.
Pop is less taken with the new neighbours – hilariously played by Morgana Robinson and Julian Rhind-Tutt – a snobby couple from London who pay over the odds for a rundown property, invite the Larkins to an excruciatingly awkward dinner party, and annoy the locals when they start shooting guns at all hours. A welcome blast of feel-good, nostalgic, escapism. ★★★★ IM
Hans Zimmer: Hollywood Rebel, 9pm, BBC Two
Hans Zimmer is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after composers and has scored over 150 films, including blockbusters such as Inception, Dune and The Dark Knight and TV shows like tonight’s Frozen Planet II. This profile tells the story of his career, with contributions from the likes of directors Christopher Nolan, Ron Howard and Denis Villeneuve. ★★★★★ NH

Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, 9pm, ITV
In this new celebrity special, Sunetra Sarker and Richard Madeley take part in the quiz to win big for charity. Will Judy be getting a call from her hubby?
Frozen Planet II, 8pm, BBC One
As always, we’ve had incredible animal footage in this series which again has refused to shy away from the everyday realities of climate change. This final episode recaps horrifying stories of baby harp seals floating to their deaths and Adelie penguin chicks succumbing to hyperthermia to highlight how global warming is affecting the planet. As we meet scientists and those battling to understand these changes, we learn that while there is still hope, we really must act now. ★★★★★ NH
Best box set to watch on TV tonight
Shameless US star Jeremy Allen White stars as young chef Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto in this critically acclaimed comedy-drama. Carmy has made a success of himself in the world of fine dining, but after the tragic suicide of his brother, he returns home to Chicago to run his family’s sandwich shop, The Original Beef of Chicagoland. It’s a different world for Carmy, who must try to get the uncooperative staff on board, cope with family rifts and navigate the tricky challenges of small business, all the while facing his own grief.
Best film to watch on TV tonight
The Muppets Most Wanted, 2:15pm, BBC One
Kermit the Frog fans, there are two of them – a good one and a villainous lookalike – in this 2014 sequel to the wildly successful reboot of all things Muppetty, 2011's The Muppets. The plot is built around a jewel heist while the Muppets are on tour in Europe and it’s just substantial enough to support the vast number of cameos – from Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga early on, to Hugh Bonneville, Tom Hiddleston, Ray Liotta and Salma Hayek later (the list really does go on and on).
And Ricky Gervais plays a bad guy called Dominic Badguy! Lots of fun, if not quite up there with the Muppets’ 2011 outing. ★★★ SM
