Best TV shows on TV tonight

DNA Journey, 9 pm, ITV1

Hugh Bonneville and John Bishop

(Image credit: Voltage TV and Mitre Productions/ITV)

Actor Hugh Bonneville and comic John Bishop team up to explore their respective family trees in the first of a new run for the celebrity genealogy series. They start near John’s old stamping ground of Liverpool, where they go down a salt mine, before heading to London’s stately Somerset House, where Hugh jokingly points at a window and tells John, ‘That was my childhood bedroom!’ It’s in Dublin that the biggest revelation comes. The unlikely duo, who became friends during lockdown, learn their family roots intertwined in the mid-19th century, when a baker related to Hugh and a musical instrument-maker John is descended from lived yards apart on the same street! ★★★★ IM

Great British Menu, 8 pm, BBC Two

This series’ theme of British animation and illustration has been an absolute delight, and in the London and South East heats, the four contestants whip up some fabulously creative dishes. As they prepare a vegan starter, there are tributes to Winnie-the-Pooh, an Indian street food take on the Gruffalo and a Caribbean twist on the Clangers! Next up, the fish course sees sea bass homages to Mr Bean and Captain Pugwash, a Pingu-inspired halibut and a trout-based celebration of Jeremy Fisher. But which three chefs will impress presenter Andi Oliver and guest judge Tommy Banks enough to make it through to tomorrow? Continues Wednesday and Thursday. ★★★★ CC

Food Unwrapped, 8 pm, Channel 4

In an episode called Veg Box, Andi Oliver explores veg that instantaneously affect us. First, she takes a trip to a factory where onions are peeled on a mass scale and asks how we can prevent our eyes from watering when chopping them. Then, she’s off on a fact-finding mission to discover why asparagus changes the smell of our pee. Elsewhere, Matt Tebutt wants to know why stir-fry veg packs have such a short shelf life. ★★★ MC

Dean Martin: King of Cool, 10 pm, Sky Arts/NOW

American singer, actor and comedian Dean Martin (1917 - 1995), circa 1960.

How did Dino Crocetti—who was born in an Italian neighbourhood in blue-collar Ohio and didn’t speak English until he went to school—become the epitome of cool that was Dean Martin? This 2021 feature-length documentary features archive performances and clips from films including Ocean’s Eleven, and contributions from Jon Hamm and Angie Dickinson, to show his journey. From a partnership with Jerry Lewis, through the Rat Pack years, to a movie career and best-selling singer in his own right, it’s quite the ride. ★★★★ JP

Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr, 8 pm, BBC One

The design show that pits 10 budding interior designers against one another in a bid to win a career-defining contract returns, with a move to BBC1 from BBC2. Alan Carr is back as host, and among the candidates are two lawyers, a furniture dealer, two architects (somewhat at an advantage, no?) and a retailer. Head judge Michelle Ogundehin is on hand with this week’s brief to fit out new eco flats in London’s Elephant and Castle – one for a mature couple, the other for flat-sharing friends. With a budget of £1,800 and a tight turnaround, the race is on to impress, with one candidate leaving the process. ★★★ MC

Best box set on TV tonight

Daisy Jones & The Six, Prime Video

Cast of Daisy Jones and The Six

Daisy and The Six frontman Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin), have a complex relationship with fame and drugs, as well as trying to resist their growing and undeniable connection to each other.

The book is told in a clever documentary style, switching back and forward in time with the band members (in the present) giving first-person accounts of their perspectives on the story of the band's rise and fall. Band members Graham (Will Harrison), Eddie (Josh Whitehouse), Karen (Suki Waterhouse) and Warren (Sebastian Chacon) discuss their time in the band and reveal what happened away from the ever-present cameras. The first three episodes are available now, and the rest of the season will drop on Fridays over the coming weeks.

Best film on TV tonight

Promising Young Woman, 9 pm, Sky Showcase/NOW

Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman.

Writer-director Emerald Fennell won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for this sharp, spiky satire, her debut film, with her much-anticipated follow-up, the thriller Saltburn starring Barry Keoghan, due soon. Carey Mulligan is pitch-perfect as a woman devastated by a traumatic past who unleashes holy hell on scummy men. She acts drunk and disorderly in bars and clubs, waiting to see whether someone will pick her up and where it will lead – all of this without her ever giving consent. It doesn’t end well for them. But when kindly paediatrician Bo Burnham comes into Mulligan’s life, it complicates her world view… ★★★★ NP
