Stephen McGann: Dr Turner faces ‘a dark, challenging event’ in Call the Midwife

What’s on TV can reveal Call the Midwife’s hard-working doctor, Patrick Turner, revisits a dark chapter from his past and it tests his marriage to Shelagh in unimaginable ways!

Stephen McGann, who plays Doctor Patrick Turner, said: “Shelagh and Patrick Turner began this series in a happy dreamland. With the arrival of their new adopted daughter Angela they have everything they ever wanted.

“But this being Call the Midwife, it’s not that easy. They face some events that are dark and incredibly challenging!”

In next Sunday’s episode Poplar is under the spell of a summer heat wave, and Patrick is pushed to the limit. In a time before sun cream was readily available, the kindly doctor's surgery is full of patients suffering the effects of the sun! To add to his workload, he is also covering for two other local GPs.

So, when it comes to treating newborn baby Raymond, overworked Patrick is deeply troubled to discover the infant has horrific injuries, consistent with violent abuse. Forced to report Raymond’s parents, Doc Turner’s mental state is tested further when complications in the case lead a fragile Patrick to question his abilities as a doctor, husband, and father…

The unhappy GP tries to hide that he’s struggling but privately is terrified his wartime shell shock has returned and he’s heading for another nervous breakdown.

Stephen hinted: “Call the Midwife reflects on misfortune, love, children, new life, the past and how far we’ve come - and maybe how far we haven’t.”

Tune into Call the Midwife on BBC1, Sunday 15 February at 8pm, to see how Patrick and his wife Shelagh (Laura Main), handle another difficult chapter in their marriage.
