Coronation Street bosses are said to be bracing themselves for complaints over a controversial new drug storyline. The plot will see seven-year-old Bethany Platt rushed to hospital after she mistakes an ecstasy tablet for a sweet, it has been reported. Producers are said to be concerned that the sight of the child in hospital will be upsetting for some viewers. David, played by Jack Shepherd, is babysitting Bethany when the incident takes place. Bethany's mum Sarah, played by Tina O'Brien, will face an anxious wait as doctors battle to save the little girl's life. A spokesman said: "The decision to pursue this wasn't taken lightly. It will make dramatic TV. The big question is: will she pull through?" David will also learn that he could face manslaughter charges if the child doesn't survive. This won't be the first time Bethany's short life has been in danger. She was kidnapped hours after her birth by Alison Webster, who was deranged with grief following the death of her own baby. Bethany's step-grandfather also attempted to drown her, Sarah, Gail and David in the Weatherfield canal. The youngster recovered from her ordeal only to be snatched again by her grandmother Brenda Ferns, who was planning to jump off a church tower with her so they could be reunited with her dead son, Neil.
