EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick has spoken about the positive effect he hopes his character will have on disuading teenagers from joining gangs. Thirteen-year-old Jamie, who plays Jay Brown, scooped the award for Best Dramatic Performance From A Young Actor at the British Soap Awards on Saturday night. In the soap, Jamie's character recently became involved in a gang - a storyline which resulted in the young boy being stabbed in the leg by one of the gang members. The shocking scene prompted more than 200 viewers to complain to the BBC. But Jamie defended the soap, claiming that it was trying to highlight what was happening in real life. "EastEnders is just trying to capture what's going on in real life. We're just trying to send the message out to people to put the knives down, who wants to carry knives, no one? "I'd like to think the storyline had helped a lot of people." Jamie also spoke with affection about Stephen Lord, who plays his on-screen father Jase Dyer. "Stephen is a gem.
