EastEnders newcomer's prison stint revealed

The mother of EastEnders newcomer Rachel Wilde has revealed that the actress once spent time in a US jail after hitting a woman with a glass in a nightclub.

Susan Wilson told the Mirror that the incident happened when Rachel - who has joined the soap as Nikki Spraggan - was 18 and working abroad as an au pair.

She admitted that the 35-year-old served three months behind bars for the incident, which occurred as she attempted to break up a fight.

"Rachel didn't actually glass the girl," Susan said. "She was trying to stop a fight and then she got annoyed and threw the glass but it hit somebody."

She added: “It was so tough for me as she was only 18. She had to go to court and was in jail for three months. I tried to help and get her out of it. It was a tough time but she’s a girl done good now and on EastEnders .”

A family friend said those close to the actress had been left 'distressed' by the incident, while a source added: “She has always been upfront about what happened but she put this behind her long ago and has since worked hard to build an acting career for herself.”

Rachel recently revealed that she won the role of Nikki after writing to the show's casting director Julia Crampsie begging for a part on the soap.
