Married Manhattan lawyer Michael Douglas enjoys a fling with Glenn Close, but it leads to all kinds of hellish fury when Close refuses to be scorned. She progresses from the persistent - badgering phone calls, unexpected appearances at his office, turning up at his home and meeting his wife (Anne Archer) - to the scary in her attempts to secure Douglas for herself. Unusually for this type of movie, director Adrian Lyne cleverly ensures that our sympathies lie with Close for at least some of the time. This is a stylish, superbly acted thriller with some brilliantly staged shocks, especially the scene which introduced the term 'bunny boiler'. However, the ending, changed after it was given the thumbs-down by preview audiences, is something of a cop-out.
