On turning 21, shy, slightly shambolic lad Domhnall Gleeson learns from his dad Bill Nighy that he has he has inherited the ability to time-travel into his past.

With certain provisos in place (he can't alter world events and can only revisit events in his own lifetime), all he needs to do is step into a small dark place, clench his fists and - ta-da! - he's back in time.

Naturally, he uses his birthright to woo - in typically fumbling fashion - equally timid Rachel McAdams.

Though the central romance in writer-director Richard Curtis’ romcom lacks spark, the leads are appealing.

However, it is the tender father-son relationship that develops between Nighy and Gleeson that touches the heart and proves a sweet bonus.
