Still desperate to prove that she's the best person to succeed Ric as Director of Surgery, Connie sees a golden opportunity to win herself points when a seemingly helpless patient is admitted to the ward. Despite Ric's warnings that any surgical treatment of 85-year-old John, who has massive heart and stomach complaints, is too dangerous, Connie ignores the red lights and books John in for treatment. Once in theatre, Connie soon regrets her decision however when her patient suffers massive complications and dies on the operating table. Ric - fuming that Connie ignored his advice - tells Connie that the incident will go on her formal record. With her promotion hopes slipping away from her, Connie confides all in a scheming Jac, who in turn contacts the press with the story… Elsewhere, after spending a night of passion together, Chrissie and Oliver arrive at work together. Penny quizzes Oliver as to their relationship and he assures her that it’s just a drunken fling, but Chrissie’s obviously got her heart set on more. When Mark expresses disapproval over his daughter’s latest choice of man, she’s dismissive, telling him she knows what she’s doing…

Patrick McLennan is a London-based journalist and documentary maker who has worked as a writer, sub-editor, digital editor and TV producer in the UK and New Zealand. His CV includes spells as a news producer at the BBC and TVNZ, as well as web editor for Time Inc UK. He has produced TV news and entertainment features on personalities as diverse as Nick Cave, Tom Hardy, Clive James, Jodie Marsh and Kevin Bacon and he co-produced and directed The Ponds, which has screened in UK cinemas, BBC Four and is currently available on Netflix.
An entertainment writer with a diverse taste in TV and film, he lists Seinfeld, The Sopranos, The Chase, The Thick of It and Detectorists among his favourite shows, but steers well clear of most sci-fi.
