Michael Portillo is on the second leg of his four-part Indian adventure and takes in the ‘golden triangle’ of Jaipur, Agra and New Delhi, as popular during the time of Bradshaw’s 1913 guide as it is today.

He gets a taste of life under British rule in Jaipur where he enjoys a gin and tonic in a former palace, before meeting an eminent maharaja and having a go at the sport of kings – polo.

In Agra, Michael takes a bath in rose petals as he soaks up the view of the Taj Mahal. But it’s not first class all the way…

En route to New Delhi he travels ‘unreserved class’ where everyone seems cheerful, whether lying on the luggage racks or dancing in the aisles!
