Inspector George Gently returns this week to say goodbye with two episodes set in 1970...

This gripping drama has never made a song and dance about its strengths, just quietly maintained its classy take on the hard-hitting issues of the late 1960s.

Now, it's sadly concluding with two final films set in 1970 as Gently (Martin Shaw) reluctantly faces retirement. But the veteran cop's enquiring spirit remains undiminished as, after a body is found in a chemical waste tank, he re-opens the case, even though the victim's wife is in prison for the murder.

This puts Gently at odds with DI Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) – we love it when they row! – who worked on the original case. But who will be proved right… and can their friendship survive?
