Joel Edgerton stars in this intelligent, gripping thriller, set in a post-apocalyptic near-future America.

Giving us an end-of-the-world narrative unlike most other movies in the genre, this lean indie movie generates its edge-of-seat suspense by simply having two families uneasily holed up together in a remote forest house.

Writer-director Trey Edwards Shults creates slow-burning tension and menace as husband and wife Edgerton and Carmen Ejogo and their teenage son (Kelvin Harrison Jr) share their refuge with strangers Christopher Abbott and Riley Keough and their young son.

Outside is a mysterious epidemic (we never learn the details), but inside paranoia and suspicion turn out to be just as dangerous…
