Three years on from the 2015 monster movie, Chris Pratt’s rugged dinosaur wrangler and Bryce Dallas Howard’s uptight executive are back in action.

The peril this time around starts when a volcano threatens the ill-fated Isla Nublar. ‘Save the dinosaurs from an island that's about to explode: what could possibly go wrong?’ asks a dubious Pratt on being asked to return to save the surviving reptiles. So Pratt and Howard, accompanied by feisty dinosaur vet Daniella Pineda and nervous-nelly tech nerd Justice Smith head off on a reckless rescue mission.

Unbeknown to them, however, the people directing the mission - notably Rafe Spall's treacherous functionary and Ted Levine's badass mercenary - have nefarious plans in store for the dinosaurs...

The ensuing adventure features plot holes a Brachiosaurus could stroll through, yet even if the story is preposterous this movie remains good escapist fun, with director JA Bayona delivering the requisite scares and thrills, piling one heart-clutching peril on top of another on the island before wrapping things up with a go-for-broke finale set in a spooky gothic mansion.
