Pc Beth Green's first day at Sun Hill gets off to a rocky start the minute she's partnered with Pc Emma Hinckley. Beth's nervous energy winds Emma up and, while attending a disturbance at a house, Beth manages to annoy Emma further by spraying CS gas into her eyes as they arrest Craig Evans. Craig and his ex-girlfriend Anna claim they broke into the house to rescue their baby who'd been stolen. But DCI Jack Meadows and DI Samantha Nixon soon discover that drug addict Anna sold her daughter to Lesley Bailey, a woman who runs a baby-selling scam - and she's now having second thoughts. As DCs Terry Perkins and Jo Masters hunt for the missing baby, Jack and Sam go undercover as a married couple unable to have children in order to bust the gang that are selling babies to childless couples. But, during the operation, Jack doubts his ability as DCI when he makes a mistake, leaving Sam in danger...
