Robert Downey Jr's ace detective Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law's reliable Dr Watson make a great double act in this tongue-in-cheek adventure.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, the emphasis is on action and comedy rather than suspense, but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters prove a perfect fit for the exciting scenes, silly laughs, some big explosions and eye-catching CGI.

The plot involves the duo taking on Satanic aristocrat Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), who apparently survives his own execution, rises from the grave and plots to wipe out the government as part of a dastardly seize of power.

With a great cast including Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade and Geraldine James as Mrs Hudson, plus Rachel McAdams and James Fox, this is slick, seamless and thoroughly entertaining - and Victorian London looks a treat, too.

This film starts at 11.15pm on Border Scotland.
