Denzel Washington's the good guy and John Travolta the baddie in director Tony Scott's flashy remake of the classic 1974 heist thriller.

The plot focuses on a gang of four robbers who hijack a packed New York subway car and demand a $10million ransom.

This film ditches the subtleties of the original, but it's incredibly fast-moving and the cast pitch their performances perfectly.

Washington is the recently demoted subway train despatcher who happens to be on duty when the gang calls to say that, unless the ransom money arrives in an hour, the captured commuters will die one per minute.

Travolta has fun with his role, John Turturro is the police negotiator and James Gandolfini sweats for America as the oily NY mayor who caves into the demands for the cash.
