Clive Owen is terrifically good as a hangdog, browbeaten dad who gets to bond with his estranged eight-year-old son in unusual circumstances in this winning comedy drama.

Taking care of his son (Jaeden Lieberher) for the weekend, Owen's unemployed Seattle carpenter drags him along on his desperate search to retrieve a stolen toolbox.

As they criss-cross the neighbourhood, finding help and hindrance from a variety of oddball characters, they slowly reconnect.

Written and directed by Bob Nelson, this movie grows on the viewer in a low-key and gentle way - as does its woebegone protagonist.

At first, you'll probably write off Owen’s character as a feckless deadbeat but, as the story unfolds, come to appreciate his weather-beaten decency.
