His work on the cutting edge of artificial intelligence offers the promise of a machine that can feel as well as think, but not everyone is convinced this is a good thing, least of all a radical bunch of anti-technology extremists.
Despite the misgivings of colleagues Paul Bettany and Morgan Freeman, Depp persuades his wife and scientific helpmate Rebecca Hall to upload his consciousness on to the super computer he has been developing.
But the virtual Depp, sucking up ever increasing amounts of energy from a gigantic solar field at his new desert HQ, is soon displaying worrying signs of world-threatening megalomania...
Though it will hardly tax your brain cells, this is an entertaining, pacy sci-fi that looks fabulous with lustrous colours and dazzling images.
