New Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has revealed that 2019 is the year of the 'F' words for the soap, with storylines packed full of fun, family, feuds and of course, the factory...

Coronation Street has revealed there is a huge storyline in the pipeline for spring next year that will see one of the cobbles' characters killed off in dramatic style when the factory roof collapses.

The new Corrie boss, Iain MacLeod, has promised there won't be a "dry eye in the house" as the "heart-breaking death" takes place in March, leaving everyone wondering who it could be that meets a grisly end.

But it's not just a death that will have fans on the edge of their seats this spring, there is also a whodunnit on the cards...

"At first it will appear to be an accident," says Iain about the factory collapse. "But then it will turn into a mystery as to who caused it all to fall down."

Iain went on to say that the factory collapse will see a new Corrie baddie emerging as a result... "When I joined the show I always regretted that I didn't get a chance to play with Phelan for a bit, not that we could ever try and recreate him, because he was so unique, but we are trying to design another Corrie villain who is wrong through-and-through."

Coronation Street spoilers: Sparks fly between Peter Barlow and Carla Connor

Will Carla's determination to make the factory a success be her downfall in Coronation Street?

But while Iain obviously remained tight-lipped about who the person responsible might be, he did hint that it was someone we already know...

"After her conversation with Peter in the snooker hall this Christmas, Carla decides that her life is her work and she wants to make the factory Aidan's legacy. But that drives her to make some mistakes shall we say.

"She will end up annoying a lot of people and then some will wish her ill - and that is where the roof collapse comes in.

"It will be someone we already know, it's essentially a whodunnit, but without a murder at the centre of it.

"Instead it is gross negligence manslaughter. For a change we are going to start with the crime and then see the motives afterwards, revealing things as the story progresses."

But it's not just Carla and the deceased who will be affected by the tragedy. Iain said that the fall out from the factory collapse will send shockwaves around Weatherfield for months.

"It is a community story. Obviously lots of people are out of a job for a while and there will be lots of personal stories that spin off from the collapse. It will have ripples that extend into the next six to 12 months. A huge stunt is only worth doing if it has other brilliant storylines spinning off from it."

Iain also promised it's not just one episode that will have us hooked... "It is a whole week of drama in March. The death is heart-breaking and definitely someone viewers will care about. There won't be a dry eye in the house."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
