Couch Potato Pickings - Musicals on Sky Modern Greats

Audrey Hepburn

On Sky Movies Modern Greats all day today, and for the remainder of the week

I mentioned recently that musicals are the perfect escapism during times of worry and hardship, and Sky obviously feel that we need a massive dose of escapsim at the moment because they're featuring musicals all week on Sky Movies Modern Greats. Today’s selection includes:

Maureen Lipman and Hugh Jackman in Oklahoma at 7.05am & 4.10am Rodgers & Hammerstein classic Carousel at 10.05am & 2am Bob Hope in Louisiana Purchase at 4.20pm

Plus these four:

Funny Face at 12.15pm & 6.15pm

A fashion photographer falls for a model while working in Paris. It features Gershwin songs and the beautiful Audrey Hepburn . What more can I say than S’wonderful.

Dreamgirls at 2.05pm & 9.45pm

Beyonce Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Jennifer Hudson

This musical is inspired by the story of Diana Ross and The Supremes and stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson. American Idol finalist Hudson is brilliant and the songs are great.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 8pm

Meat Loaf

A cult favourite. I wonder how many venues up and down the country will be hosting Rocky Horror nights this Halloween...

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas at 12 midnight

Hannah Montana fans know her as Miley’s godmother, but way before she shrewdly decided to jump onto this wholesome Disney vehicle to secure a new, young fanbase, Dolly Parton played brothel madam Mona in this musical.

But rest assured, there’s nothing dirty going on, as Dolly makes quite clear in this clip:

I love this scene. I saw the red dress in the flesh (although without the flesh, sadly) in the Chasing Rainbows Museum when I went to Dollywood last year.
