Chris Barrie: Red Dwarf XI goes into new areas and explores new ideas (VIDEO)

Chris Barrie, Craig Charles and Robert Llewellyn had huge fun making the new series of Red Dwarf and explain how the show isn't standing still

Red Dwarf returns to our screens for a brand new series this week and with another one on the way next year, the cult sci-fi sitcom shows no signs of slowing down as it approaches its 20th birthday.

What's on TV caught up with Chris Barrie, Craig Charles and Robert Llewellyn, who play Rimmer, Lister and Kryten respectively, to talk about the new six-part series.

"We had enormous fun making Red Dwarf XI," said Robert Llewellyn. "Even though we stopped making the show for a few years, it never felt like it."

Details about the new series are a closely guarded secret, but Chris Barrie advised us to look out for some famous cameos...

"We are exploring new ideas and new areas," explained Chris. "The writing is as sharp as ever and the chemistry is still there. There are lots of adventures and lots of fantastic guest performances. Unfortunately we can't tell you who will be appearing so you'll have to wait and see!"

Craig Charles has revealed that one of the episodes will go down as one of the most edgy Red Dwarf tales ever.

"There's an episode that's quite dark for Red Dwarf actually," he said. "It's quite menacing!"

Red Dwarf XI starts on Thursday, September 22 on Dave
