Jessica Raine is a far cry from Call the Midwife’s prim Jenny Lee in this riveting drama set in 1960s Aden. She’s a scene-stealing revelation as Alison Laithwaite, the boozy, ballsy and heart-breakingly damaged wife of Lieutenant Ed Laithwaite (Stephen Campbell Moore), part of a unit of royal military policemen fighting to maintain the upper hand in one of the war-torn last bastions of the British Empire. The opener is a combination of high-octane action, with the men drawn into altercations with local insurgents, and glamour, as their wives – including Jessie Buckley as new arrival Honor Martin – fret, fuss and make their own fun in the sultry heat of the desert. This fascinating three-part series explores the diverse wildlife of Indonesia, Malaysia and New Guinea. This first episode reveals how the forces of nature have shaped life there. The highlights include the volcano bird who uses volcanic ash to incubate her eggs so she doesn’t have to, the odd, but colourful cassowary, and the tree kangaroo which has evolved from a thing that hops to a lean, mean tree-climbing machine. When Imo begins her vlog, she’s a fun-loving teen, but egged on by her friend ‘Anna’ to eat less and exercise more, we see anorexia take hold. The eating disorder personified, Anna is played by Eva O’Connor, who wrote the play this series of eight 10-minute episodes is based on. It sounds grim, but this drama from Kay Mellor’s production company uses light and dark to tackle the issue. All episodes are available from today. Rating: ****
