Best TV shows on TV tonight
Jay Blades' East End Through Time, 9 pm, Channel 5
The Repair Shop presenter Jay Blades is back on his home turf of London’s East End to delve deeper into its rich history. The three-part series begins with Jay discovering the story behind the original ‘Jack the Lad’, visiting the remains of Shoreditch’s Curtain Theatre, where Shakespeare allegedly wrote Romeo and Juliet, and hearing about East End boxing legend Daniel Mendoza.
He also learns about the Huguenots, who introduced silk weaving to the area in the 16th century. This gives fashion-lover Jay the perfect opportunity to dress up in some fancy 18th-century attire before later heading off to try his hand at mudlarking on the banks of the River Thames.

As the knife-crime initiative gets under way, head teacher Kim (Angela Griffin) needs it to be a success, so calls in reinforcements. Enter reformed ex-con Lenny – if he looks familiar, it’s because he’s played by Jack Ashton, known to us as Call the Midwife’s Rev Tom Hereward.
While there’s no dog collar in sight, there’s an abundance of empathy, as Lenny takes troubled Danny under his wing in a bid to guide him towards a brighter future. A likeable character, passionate about his cause, who proves that not all heroes wear capes.

The Martin Lewis Money Show, 8 pm, ITV1
Martin Lewis’s prodigious command of his subject once again is put to a live test as he answers viewers’ questions about all things money. The Yorkshire Vet, 8 pm, Channel 5
How do you deal with a calf that’s got a football-sized hernia hanging off its underside? Vet Dan decides that the best way to proceed is by knocking the animal out and then getting in there to have a look. Strangely, in Thirsk, Julian is also dealing with a lump hanging off an animal. Winnie the bloodhound has a growth the size of a small melon on her back.
Again, out comes the knockout jab. But up on the North York Moors, brave Peter decides that the teeth of alpacas Vishnu and Voldemort can be trimmed without putting his woolly patients to sleep. Just a bit of a sedative and in he goes armed only with what looks like a cheesewire plus a lot of skill and attitude. Great TV.
