Best TV shows on TV tonight

Next Level Chef, 9 pm, ITV1

We love a cookery contest with a twist, and Gordon Ramsay’s fast-paced new show definitely brings something fresh to the genre. The series is set in a huge kitchen spread out over three floors and sees 12 contestants, who include home cooks and professional chefs, each being assigned to one of the levels.

That’s where things get interesting, as the upper floor has tip-top equipment, the middle has average utensils, while the basement could find the foodies cooking with blunt knives! To make it even tougher, they have only 30 seconds to pick ingredients before cooking for Gordon and fellow top chefs Paul Ainsworth and Nyesha Arrington, star of the US version.

Dogs in the Wild: Meet the Family, 8 pm, BBC1

Dogs In The Wild: Meet The Family will introduce us to the world's most remarkable dogs.

We’ve met many of the 37 different members of the wild dog family, and now it’s time to meet those who are fighting to protect them. In the last episode of the series narrated by Chris Packham, we see farmers and conservationists in Brazil co-operating to save maned wolves. We also witness tiny captive-born red wolf pups in America put into wolves’ dens and then adopted by the pack, allowing them to live wild.

And, finally, we learn how the discovery that African wild dogs die from broken-heart syndrome when separated from their families has changed the way they are rescued.

Landscape Artist of the Year, 8 pm, Sky Arts

The art competition is back for its eighth series, with Stephen Mangan and Joan Bakewell skipping from Portrait to Landscape as our interested hosts. Eight official entrants – and 50 wildcard artists – enjoy the simple but invigorating pleasure of plein air painting and get to visit some of the UK’s most stunning locations in the process, beginning with the Victorian seaside glamour of Blackpool North Pier.

Welcome to Chippendales, Disney Plus

Kumail Nanjiani in Welcome to Chippendales

It’s not all body-shaking and baby oil, as the largely unknown and outrageous story of how an Indian immigrant to America became the unlikely owner of the world’s greatest male stripping empire is laid bare in this true-crime saga. Set against the backdrop of sleazy 1980s LA, the eight-part series follows the fortunes of Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee (Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani) as he launches Chippendales and, in the decade that follows, goes from successful businessman to accessory to murder…

The racy drama also stars Dan Stevens, Juliette Lewis and Nicola Peltz Beckham. An intriguing tale with great performances throughout, this is a compelling watch.

The RigPrime Video

Martin Compston in a boiler suit in The Rig

An atmospheric supernatural thriller starring Line of Duty’s Martin Compston, Mark Bonnar and Iain Glen. The crew of the Kinloch Bravo rig are ready for danger, but not for the terrifying, unexplained events that start to unfold after a sudden power failure. As the rig is shaken by massive tremors, all communication to the outside world is lost and a mysterious thick fog rolls in. Then one of the crew is badly injured in an accident while other disturbing occurrences quickly follow….

Best film on TV tonight

Heat, BBC iPlayer

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in Heat

Michael Mann’s extraordinary crime movie is based on his TV movie LA Takedown, but is a far superior product. Robert De Niro is the stoic career criminal and Al Pacino the detective hot on his trail. What is so interesting is the characters created by Mann – De Niro seems almost moral in what he does, while Pacino is a mess, with familial problems all of his own creation.

Both actors are spot-on, as are the impressive list of supporting thesps, including Val Kilmer, but it is Mann’s film and he mixes superb action sequences, such as the brilliant shoot-out in the LA sunshine, with intense quiet moments. Exceptional.
