Coronation Street to get its first Muslim family

Coronation Street has confirmed it will be introducing its first Muslim family to the soap.

Producers of the ITV show - which has been running for over 50 years - have decided to introduce the family of new character Khalid 'Kal' Nasir, who will join him on the cobbles later this year.

Personal trainer Kal, played by Jimi Mistry, arrived in Weatherfield last month, and has revealed he is a widower with two children.

Marc Anwar, who recently appeared alongside Tom Hanks in Bafta-nominated film Captain Phillips, has already been cast as Kal's father Sharif, and Coronation Street bosses are looking to cast Kal's mum and his two kids.

Producer Stuart Blackburn revealed: "Kal and his son and daughter live with his mum and dad so we're going to bring them on to the Street. And that'll be the first Muslim family that Corrie's ever had. Bizarre isn't it?"

Kal's arrival on the cobbles has led to the addition of a gym to the soap's new set in MediaCityUK, Salford.

BBC soap EastEnders introduced Muslim family the Masoods in 2007.
