Emmerdale star Gillian Kearney tells Soaplife that Emma Barton has taken James hostage to try and make him fall for her again! It's an insane plot. Has she finally completely lost the plot?

Emma is keeping James a prisoner…What is she thinking? “Emma goes into another mode. She is not being rational and believes she can make James fall in love with her again.”

Why does Emma put on her old wedding dress? “It is the dress she wore when she married James the first time round – she puts it on as a little reminder of the time when he did love her. She finds it really sentimental that he kept it for her.”

Does she fear that James loves Moira? “Yes, she overheard him talking about what he said to Moira at the hospital and it was a game changer. She was devastated and the whole Moira thing is like a red rag to a bull as far as Emma is concerned.”

Is she angry with James? “She thinks it isn’t really his fault and that he’s been brainwashed.”

Is she trying to hurt James? “No, not at all. She just becomes super caring. Emma wants to keep James under lock and key and away from Moira until he falls in love with her again. That is what she is waiting for, but it never quite happens.”

Does James appreciate Emma’s efforts? “He gets quite violent with her. He’s not at all happy that she has been feeding him morphine and gives as good as he gets.”

How does James end up wearing his wedding suit? “Emma finds her dress and then she gives James a jab to make him sleep and puts his suit on. He wakes up and is like ‘Why am I wearing this?’ She is not being cruel though, it is her way of trying to work this problem out between them.”

Does her plan work? “Not exactly because she ties James up and he breaks free and escapes.”

Do you enjoy playing Emma when she is really crazy? “I do, but even though she has lost it, I tried to find the humanity in her. I try hard not to make her sound like a cliché.”
