Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke star as loser brothers who are strapped for cash. Increasingly desperate - Hoffman is fiddling the books where he works and Hawke is having an affair with Hoffman's wife (Marisa Tomei) - they plot a seemingly foolproof robbery of the jewellery shop owned by their parents (Albert Finney and Rosemary Harris) - with inevitably tragic results.
Director Sidney Lumet turns in a smashing, twisty, nerve-jangling and impeccably acted thriller, commandingly told in a teasing flashback form.
