Jude Law and Ed Harris are on superb form in this compelling World War Two drama.

It's late 1942, the German and Soviet armies are locked in the Battle of Stalingrad and a cat-and-mouse battle of wits ensues between Law’s Russian sniper and German marksman Harris, who has orders to kill him.

With the stalemated struggle creating casualties by the thousands, Russian government men Joseph Fiennes and Bob Hoskins (as politician Nikita Khrushchev) are keen to build up Law's character into an inspirational hero.

Inspired by a true story, this is a gripping, suspenseful, nail-biting drama and, though some plot threads seem unduly contrived (not least a daring child spy and Rachel Weisz as Law's frontline love interest), the re-creation of the ruined city is faultless.
