This whole hairy, rugged look that Ashley's got going on is working for him, but it doesn't impress Bernice. Nothing about Ashley or Laurel impresses Bernice and even though they have homes (well, just) and jobs and friends and she doesn't, she still feels superior to them. Which is why she's not going to let them tell her how to treat her own daughter, Gabby. Even though, as Ashley points out, it wasn't Bernice's maternal instincts that pulled her back to Emmerdale. Bernice later admits to Diane that her marriage isn't on the rocks, it's sunk. Hmmmm, wonder what the problem was... Paddy has a new problem: Brett the vet. The bloke is good at his job, good-looking - and he's going to be living with Rhona and Paddy until he can find his own place to live. And when Brett the vet comes in from work he offers to cook - another thing he's good at. Paddy's feeling threatened and insecure, but Rhona's too tired to care. Uh-oh. Katie's feeling insecure, too. Declan's saying the right things and doing the right things, but it feels like there's something wrong between them. Ah, being lady of the manor is a double-edged sword and Katie has to be careful not to cut herself...

An entertainment writer with a diverse taste in TV and film, he lists Seinfeld, The Sopranos, The Chase, The Thick of It and Detectorists among his favourite shows, but steers well clear of most sci-fi.
