An ambitious project is about to turn the capital's river into a river of light

In London's Great Bridges: Lighting the Thames, there's a  change of territory for Charlie Luxton.

He's swapping architecture for something that’s actually quite hard to put in a box.

The Illuminated River project is on a mission to deck out 15 of London’s iconic bridges with lights, over 100,000 of them, transforming a five-mile stretch of the river Thames into a fantastical nightly light show.

The first part opens this Summer, with work not scheduled to be completed until 2022.

London's Great Bridges: Lighting the Thames. Charlie Luxton and Ben Wilson, the Chewing Gum Man

Charlie Luxton gets down on the ground with Ben Wilson aka The Chewing Gum Man.

Charlie drops in to see how work is going on what has been called the largest public art work ever conceived, and one that is designed to lift onlookers’ spirits (and for free) whether they’re weary Londoners commuting home, visiting tourists or viewers catching Big Ben’s bongs as TV rings in the New Year.
