Shetland returns with DI Jimmy Perez and the team on the case of a young man's murder
On a windswept beach, a bag containing a severed hand with its fingerprints burned off is washed up on the shore, soon followed by a severed head on another inlet.
So begins what’s set to be another grisly but gripping case for DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) and the gang (pictured top with Alison O'Donnell as DS Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh).
The victim’s identity leaves the team baffled till a visitor to the islands comes forward, and soon motives galore (and some shifty-looking locals!) emerge.
But when a strange video is found in the dead man’s email, the case takes a very different turn…

How does Perez tackle such a sinister case?
He’s shocked that something like this has happened in Shetland.
I don’t think he’s trying to save the world – he’s trying to protect his part of the world.
There’s a race against time and that cranks up the pace.
It’s such an enormous chain to investigate to get to the culprits, but it would be too implausible to wrap it all up with a nice ribbon.
The issues dealt with are particularly harrowing…
We’ve had hard subject matters in the past, and this storyline is something everyone knows a bit about but not how insidious, grubby and grim it is.
It’s shocking. Glasgow’s my home city, plus I live in London, and places like nail bars and car washes are where trafficked people get shunted and it really made me think.
This series is asking a lot of awkward questions, which I like.
