Jake Gyllenhaal makes every second count as a soldier who wakes up in the body of a stranger and discovers that he has eight minutes to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.

Then, when the bomb goes off, he gets another eight minutes – and so on until he can find a way to stop the atrocity.

This extremely slick and smartly made action thriller may be baffling, but it’s also incredibly clever with a brilliant pay-off.

Most of its success is down to Gyllenhaal’s commanding star presence, but Michelle Monaghan makes an unusual, effective love interest as a fellow commuter he gets close to, while Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright are sparky as the folks who know what’s really going on.
