Coronation Street fans stunned to spot THIS very familiar face on the cobbles last night

Coronation Street newcomer Bernie is no stranger to soap fans...

There's always huge excitement when a new character joins Coronation Street, but last night (24th July) saw newcomer Bernie cause something of a stir amongst soap fans who have seen her somewhere before.

Gemma Winter's mum Bernie, played by actress Jane Hazlegrove, arrived on the cobbles with a bang last night as she turned up to 'borrow' her daughter's fundraising cash that locals had donated for Gemma's unborn quads.

But while Bernie wasted no time in rubbing daddy-to-be Chesney up the wrong way, eagle-eyed viewers realised that they had seen actress Jane on the cobbles before...

But not only has Jane appeared on Coronation Street before when she played Sue Clayton back in 1985, she has also appeared in The Bill, Silent Witness and Doctors.

However, people are most likely to remember the actress from Casualty, where she played Kathleen 'Dixie' Dixon for 10 years.

The character Dixie became a firm favourite with fans during the decade she was on screen, with everyone remembering her for her iconic cropped blonde hair.

The Casualty character Dixie has even made an appearance in Holby City!

But Jane's Coronation Street character Bernie is a far cry from her Casualty role, and last night fans were loving her grand entrance.

Not only did she manage to get on the wrong side of Chesney by asking for money intended for her future grandchildren, but she also had viewers in stitches as she stayed the night at Chesney's and offered for him to share her bed.

As an unsuspecting Chesney settled down on the sofa, having given up his bed for Gemma's mum as a goodwill gesture, he was horrified when she turned up to say goodnight wearing nothing but a towel.

Bernie then suggestively asked Chesney if he would like to share her bed rather than sleeping downstairs, and fans were loving her brazenness!

And there's plenty more to come from Bernie... because by Friday's episodes Chesney is set to find her stark naked in his kitchen!

Chesney complains to Paul about his mum's not-so-subtle flirting, but meanwhile Bernie reports back to Gemma, claiming that Chesney came on to her and not the other way round.

Get ready for drama!

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
