Gilmore Girls’ ‘classiest’ star dies

Gilmore Girls fans will be sad to hear that Edward Herrmann, who played Richard Gilmore in the award-winning American comedy-drama, died on New Year’s Eve in a hospital in New York. He was 71.

Herrmann's family has said he had been battling brain cancer and had been in hospital for a few weeks.

Herrmann was married twice and and leaves behind three children. 

Herrmann was on Gilmore Girls for its entire run of seven series and recently appeared in several episodes of The Good Wife. He also famously starred alongside Macaulay Culkin in Richie Rich.

Lauren Graham - Herrmann's TV daughter - tweeted: "My friend Ed Herrmann was the kindest, classiest, most talented man.  It was an honour and a joy to know him, a devastating blow to lose him."

Gilmore Girls continues on 5*, Monday, January 5, 1.00pm.
