Abi Franklin looks set to spend the festive season in the slammer - possibly with Sally as a cellmate!

Coronation Street is to continue its long tradition of locking up the soap’s female characters for crimes they didn’t commit when Abi Franklin is banged up for the festive season.

According to The Sun Online, the unfortunate mechanic will be arrested by the police following the massive crash involving Michelle Connor’s car.

The crash is thought to lead to at least one character losing their life and poor Abi (Sally Carman) is set to take the blame for Tracy Barlow’s meddling with the motor. Tracy (Kate Ford) tinkered with the car because she wrongly thought Abi had slept with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), when it was actually Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson).

Tracy Barlow vandalises Michelle’s car, knowing Abi will get the blame.

Tracy Barlow is the real culprit

Suspecting the crash was Abi’s fault, the cops nick her and send her to jail, leading to the possibility that she won’t be released even if she’s found innocent in a trial until early next year.

A source told The Sun: “Abi has worked really hard to turn her life around but this could undo all that.

“She’s going to end up behind bars for a crime she didn’t commit and no one’s going to believe that she isn’t responsible.”

It seems unlikely that Tracy is going to cough up for the crime, so Abi could be in the slammer for a lengthy sentence.

At least she joins a fine Corrie tradition of wrongly locking up its female characters. Earlier this year Sally Metcalfe headed behind bars - Sally could end up as Abi's cellmate! Before her Anna Windass, Fiz Stape, and, most famously of all, poor old Deirdre Rachid all found themselves spending time at Her Majesty’s pleasure.

With Abi having to rely on Tracy doing the decent thing, we think her chances of getting out any time soon look slim.

Coronation Street continues on ITV on Friday evening at 7.30pm.
