TV Times top picks tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Tuesday 29th May

Grammar School: Who will get in?, 9pm (times vary), BBC2

With the 11-plus exam and grammar schools back on the Government’s agenda, and selective education as competitive as ever, this three-part documentary takes a timely look at the arguments for and against them from all sides. This first episode follows four children in their final year of primary school who are all taking the 11-plus. For some that means a fortune spent on private tutors, hours and hours of study and a lot of pressure. But how do the children feel who don’t get the right results to get into grammar school? And if the selective schools are taking all the gifted children, what impact does that have on the other, non-selective schools? Rating: ****

Code Black, 10pm, W

Welcome back to LA’s Angels Memorial! The pulse-quickening medical drama returns for a third season, with a fresh batch of new residents facing a seriously hectic first day. Under the watchful eye of boss Dr Rorish (Marcia Gay Harden) the newbies are thrown in at the deep end after a drug bust turns into a deadly shootout. With one first year getting in everyone’s way by filming a documentary amid the mayhem, and another ending up in a hospital bed, this is a day everyone will remember… Moon Bloodgood joins the cast as paramedic Rox, who’s unimpressed when she is partnered up with ‘death wish’ army medic Col. Ethan Willis (Rob Lowe). Can he win her round? Rating: ****

The Battle for Britain’s Heroes, 9pm, C4

A thought-provoking film about whether we should still celebrate and idolise some of the most well-known figures in British history. Writer and journalist Afua Hirsch feels the version of history many of us know fails to mention serious shortcomings in our national heroes – do we need to take another look? Rating: ***

More previews tomorrow.
