Expect the unexpected with this addictive new six-parter, which takes a raw, forensic look at relationships by blending a romcom with an off-beat whodunnit while adding a dash of fantasy, a whale and even a cameo from Sir Tom Jones! James Corden plays chef Jamie, whose life falls apart when he learns a terrible secret about wife Amandine (Melia Kreiling). But as the mystery unravels, the bombshells keep coming, provoking questions about how well we really know those closest to us… Look out for Sally Hawkins and Colin Morgan as Jamie’s sister and brother-in-law, who have major problems of their own. ★★★★ CC

Petula Clark Night, from 9 pm, BBC Four

BBC Four is devoting an evening to the singer Petula Clark, who will be 90 on 15 November. Having begun as a child entertainer for BBC Radio during World War Two and still working now – she has been playing the part of the Bird Woman in the acclaimed theatre production of Mary Poppins in London’s West End – Petula has had one of the longest careers of a British singer. Tonight begins with a new compilation show, Petula Clark at the BBC, followed by a 1974 concert from the Royal Albert Hall (10 pm & 10.45 pm) and ends with an episode of The Sound of Petula (11.30 pm), the singer’s musical variety BBC series which ran from 1972 to 1974. ★★★ JP

QI, 10 pm, BBC Two

The entertaining panel-show quiz is back for a brand-new series, and this time it’s reached the letter ‘T’. Sandi Toksvig returns as the genial but firm host, along with resident panellist Alan Davies, who can always be relied upon to wander off on a slightly-rude-but-very-amusing tangent. They’re joined tonight by QI regulars Bill Bailey, Holly Walsh and Joe Lycett (who don hard hats for a rummage through the theme ‘top tips and tools’) and also, for the first time since 2020, a studio audience. ★★★★ JP

Susan Calman's Grand Day Out, 8 pm, Channel 5

Susan’s UK adventure in her trusty campervan ‘Helen Mirren’ continues as this week she explores rural Shropshire. After consulting her maps at picturesque Stokesay Castle, she heads off to Ironbridge to marvel at the world’s first iron bridge, built in 1779, before later exploring the beautiful town of Ludlow, where she meets super-cute hedgehogs being cared for by the charity Pricklebums. But it’s getting the chance to drive a steam train that really gets her excited. ‘This has been a childhood dream of mine!’ beams Susan as she gets behind the controls at Cambrian Heritage Railways. ★★★★ TL

SAS Rogue Heroes is a bold new drama from Steven Knight. (Image credit: BBC/Kudos/Rory Mulvey)

After his searing gangster saga came to an end after six series, Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight started looking for a new project and has found a cracker in this wartime drama about the creation of the Hereford-based Special Air Service – SAS. Another tale packed with mavericks, rule-breakers and antiheroes, this six-parter follows three British soldiers who terrorised Hitler’s forces in the deserts of North Africa, with Alfie Allen, Connor Swindells and Jack O’Connell having a ball in the lead roles. The result is a rollicking tale that feels like a cross between Band of Brothers and Knight’s previous hit series, so buckle up! (Also airing Sundays at 9 pm on BBC One) ★★★★★ SMA

Best film on TV tonight

Ambulance, 8 pm, Sky Cinema Premiere, NOW

Jake Gyllenhaal with a gun in Ambulance movie

Based on the 2005 Danish thriller Ambulencen, this US adaptation is directed by Michael Bay and pumps up the stress levels to make chef-in-meltdown hit drama The Bear seem like a relaxing meditation session. Jake Gyllenhaal is a career criminal whose adoptive brother (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) reconnects with him when he desperately needs money for his sick wife’s medical bills.

The bank heist they carry out goes badly wrong and they end up hijacking an ambulance that contains a heroic medic (Eiza González) trying to keep an injured cop alive. Cue a breathless 90-minute car chase involving the FBI and the LAPD…
